There was an 'Alan Delon' brand of cigarettes in Cambodia, which I thought entirely appropriate as he seemed to have a ciggie in his mouth in most of his roles, the poster guy for making smoking look cool, and Iv'e never smoked.
They were sold there in 1998 when I was visiting . The pack was a dark red with 'Alain Delon' in gold and a gold AD signature on it. I have a souvenir pack but the system here doesn't seem to allow me to attach images. If you put in a search for images, there's some Cambodian billboards featuring that package
Delon also demonstrated that handsome men are not all dumb as a stack of posts. HIs choices of directors (Visconti, Losey, Melville, Antonioni) show that, and interview responses, even very early in his career. He wasn't always well-inspired in his personal life but as an actor you could see the intelligence through the role. Even more impressive because he was untrained, a natural talent - and a sharp awareness of what it meant to be a star. I disagree on the Red Sun rating, lol. I think it's campy and a waste of talent. I'd put Plein Soleil (Purple Noon) in there, he's the perfect Ripley.
Vale indeed Alain Delon, an aesthetic unto himself. In addition to the films you mention, I also enjoyed his performance in Un Flic. In truth, I could watch him walk on screen in anything. Reposez en paix.

Really?! I did not know that. Do you know when that was and what the pack looked like?

Yes, I had a look and found them. Now that you have mentioned it, I very vaguely remember seeing them when I was living in Cambodia in 2008.
Another delon film I enjoyed was purple noon subtitles and all.
It is great, agreed.

Fair enough re your comments on RED SUN. I maintain that it is a great Delon performance. I totally agree with you about his taste in roles.
