The concept of a guilty pleasure is up there with the word problematic as my most despised terms when it comes to cinema.
I discovered this film around the same time as Young Cassidy. Rod Taylor certainly could deliver a performance beyond his matinee idol name.
I really like Letterboxd but your description of some of its users as cultural studies grads with too much time on their hands is spot on. I too was one in early 90s and it took awhile to shake off some of the excess of that strain of my education

I thought I'd read every Wilbur Smith novel as a teenager, but I don't think I ever got around to Dark Of The Sun.
I would not recommend making time for this one. A rare case of the film being waaaaay better than the novel.
